I can't go into details, but I'll Lucene plays a role.

Aha.  Wrong tool for the job.  That's why you can currently do only tag
"intersections" (read: conjunctive boolean queries), while Simpy can do
all kinds of other crazy things with tags or any other terms.

No, you didn't - it's not there.  The "popular" works only when the
userbase is homogenous (e.g. all/mostly technical people).  Even you
said you can no longer stand that list of CSS sites... :)  I'll blog
about that on Simpy's blog after the release.
