tags work when there are enough different contributors so that the
(inherent) variety of tag choices starts overlapping anyway. Also,
without the list of already-used tags at hand, tag choices will be
uninformed-- again, making it less useful for a small group. And to
your first take-away, how does benefit me in an obvious and immediate
way? :)

I think Jeremy may have meant "how does this benefit me, the sender?" I
can't think of a benefit to mail tagging that's not already addressed via
subject lines, in-reply-to headers, and recipients. What would "tag
support" look like in a mailing list program? Why would Technorati-spider
attention to mail tags be useful, keeping in mind that I don't find their
current blog post tagging particularly helpful.
Tags assigned **by recipients** could be pretty cool. Mailing list
software that supports such tags would be interesting.
